The partnership between Friends of Literacy and the Knox County Adult Literacy Program, Ross Learning Center and  Pellissippi State adult education delivers literacy delivers literacy (reading, writing, spelling, math) and related services (interpersonal communication, team-building, goal-setting, problem-solving, time management, motivation, individual responsibility, parenting, budgeting, self-esteem, respect for others, computer training, lifelong learning) to adults and families in Knox County.
Our goal is to give students the basic tools they need to become better workers, parents, and citizens. Most students initially read and write below a sixth-grade level. Classes are described in more detail below. If you know someone that could benefit from these services please e-mail us or call 865-594-1507.
ADULT LITERACY CLASSES
We provide financial and material support to classes designed to address the academic needs of adults who read at or below a sixth grade level. Reading, math, and language arts are taught. Classes are designed to help students make it through the program and eventually obtain a GED.
ADULT EDUCATION
We provide financial and material support to classes designed to address the academic needs of adult students who read above a sixth grade level. These classes are designed to help students obtain their GED.
VOLUNTEERS
We provide volunteers for individual students and classrooms. These volunteers come from all segments of the community; corporate, civic, and community individuals and groups commit to at least 3 hours per week. For more information about becoming a volunteer, please visit the volunteer section of the Web site.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
This fiscal year we hope to provide financial and material support for ELL (English Language Learners) classes. We are also initiating Family Literacy classes. A third area of development is the design and development of Recruitment and Retention programs.
"Friends of Literacy strives to help volunteers realize that their efforts at helping someone learn to read not only changes the life of that person, but also, in the process and result, it changes the entire community. One person. That's how you start to change the world."
