More than 10,000 adults in Knox County cannot read or write above a sixth-grade level, and we need your help to remedy this problem.
The inability to read creates a daily struggle. The functionally illiterate cannot follow a recipe, understand the directions on a bottle of medication, or help their child with homework. If you cannot read you cannot improve the quality of your life. One of the greatest tragedies of illiteracy is that it is often passed from one generation to another. |

"Friends of Literacy strives to help volunteers realize that their efforts at helping someone learn to read not only changes the life of that person, but also, in the process and result, it changes the entire community. One person. That's how you start to change the world."
